The thing that stands out to me when I think of the 90s is the bold, brave lip colours. The lips seem to be the focal point of every look, which makes such a difference to today’s makeup that focuses mainly on brows, contour or eye makeup. They mostly kept the eye makeup minimum and paired that with one of the colours I have listed below.
Reds used in the 90s had more of a brown/orangey undertone rather than bright reds with a blue undertone. This shade especially suits those with dark hair like Cindy Crawford shown in the photo above. An example of a brick red lipsticks would be MAC’s Matte Lipstick in Chili.
This is definitely my favourite kind of lip colour. It’s a shade that can almost not be explained, but it’s unique colour will always make you stand out. Illamasqua’s Galmore Lipstick in Buff is a great example of this 90s lip.
For those of you that want to be particularly bold with your lip colour, the 90s vampy lip is definitely one to try. This is a great look for winter months and doesn’t require much eye makeup to finish off the look as the lip says it all! To get this vampy look try Charlotte Tilbury’s Lipstick in Night Crimson.
Dark Lip Liner
This is a look that has to be recreated carefully, as it can look quite silly if the liner is not blended enough. The darker outer line and the lighter lip gives the illusion that the lips are bigger and more pursed, almost like contouring for your lips. A great liner that would be perfect for this would be the NYX Slide On Pencil in Urban Cafe.
Another red shade that was commonly used in the 90s would have a deep pink undertone that made the lip resemble a berry colour. This is a perfect shade for anyone that is maybe a little afraid to wear a bright red lipstick, but still wants to add a little colour to the lips. MAC’s Satin Lipstick in Retro is what I use to recreate this look.
So let’s throw it back to the 90s girls and try out some of these lip colours! For regular updates please follow me on Instagram and like my Facebook page. To book an appointment please contact me here, or for any other information visit the services page.
